Dolly Parton, country music legend, is once again making headlines, but this time for her inspiring commitment to children’s literacy. Through her Imagination Library, parents can apply for a free, age-appropriate book to be mailed to their child every month from birth to age 5.

The program, launched in 1995 in Tennessee, has become a beloved initiative that now spans across the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Ireland. Just last year, over 36 million books were mailed out, contributing to a total of over 264 million books delivered to children since its inception. The Imagination Library focuses on providing high-quality, developmentally appropriate books with no income or eligibility requirements.

A recent post on the Mommit subreddit shared glowing praise from a parent whose child has been enjoying the program. “Hey!!! My son is 2 and we LOVE books and reading,” the parent shared. “The Dolly Parton Imagination Library sends a free book in the mail to us every month from newborn to age 5. The books are wonderful.” One book they recently received was The Very Hungry Caterpillar Eats Breakfast, but the program sends a different book each month, carefully selected based on the child’s age.

To participate, families simply need to check if they live in an active service area, and registration is as easy as filling out a simple form on the Imagination Library website.

The program’s success is largely due to Dolly and the Dollywood Foundation, who cover the costs of book selection, administration, and shipping logistics. Local organizations fund the costs of books and postage, ensuring that every dollar raised stays within the community. Many parents expressed their gratitude and the importance of contributing to ensure the program’s sustainability and continued growth.

Not in an active service area? Parents have shared other free or affordable book programs in the comments, including Book Bundler, Little Free Library, and the Jewish-run PJ Library, providing families with additional options to access free books.
